      When i started my phd degree (the 3 year degree to train me as an independent research scientist), I was learning to write computer programs to study how animals find food and interact with each other. For months, I would dream of writing my computer program and of being trapped in a loop of computer code that was doing the same thing over and over again! It was like when I used to play the computer game Tetris and I would get stuck in a never ending game. More of a nightmare really!

      Over time this stopped, but it was really useful. Often I would wake up and have solved the programming problem i was stuck on the night before!

      @james
      I think I do actually. Sometimes to go to bed with a specific scientific problem in your head and next morning you wake up with a solution! I thinik it is because you mind still tries to solve the problem while you are sleeping… 😉

      Sometimes, although I forget a lot of my dreams. Some scientists who study dreams say that people only remember about 10% of their dreams. I think I remember even less! I like to think about what my dreams might mean. Apparently the Ancient Egyptians were interested in dream interpretation – and that was about 3,000 years ago!

      I don’t usually remember my dreams unless I wake up. And waking up is not one of my skills! I normally dream about whatever I was thinking about before I fell asleep, and sometimes that is science and sometimes it’s not. I’m like Shane – I usually only dream about science when there’s a problem I’m trying to figure out.
