      Hi

I guess it all happened gradually. I was always interested in going to museums and my mum and dad always brought me to them when we visited somewhere new. The Natural History Museum in London and the Science Museum next door have always been my most favourite places to visit since I was very young. As a kid, my mum tells me i was always collecting spiders and beetles and things in the garden, so I guess I was always headed for a job as a scientist!

In school, I was lazy. The only subjects that I really liked and worked at were biology, geography, physics and maths (although i should have studied harder for maths and physics). So it was quite natural for me to do science in university.

I was very curious to understand how man made things but also natural phenomena worked! The world around me felt so much more interesting and precious once I understood the science behind it! It is a great feeling you get once you understand for example how gravity stops you from falling off the surface of the earth if you live “down under” (Australia) and how it also makes the planets rotate around the Sun which is so important to sustain life! 🙂

Dinosaurs, without a doubt. I always asked lots of questions about why things are the way that they are, but when I was young, my parents took me to the natural history museum in London. I tried to touch the teeth of a giant T rex skull to see if they were still sharp. They were…

Then in school, biology was my favourite subject, so it made sense for me to go on and study it at university. I spent four years in colllege during which time I got to discover exactly which areas of biology interested me the most and I focused on them. And that’s how I ended up here, doing a PhD which I love.

For me, my interest in science started when I was a kid because I LOVED animals. I had a dog when I was a kid. When I was about 13, I started volunteering in the zoo in the city where i grew up. This convinced me that I really liked animals, and wanted to do something like zoology. So now, I am working with flamingos…which makes me really happy! And I’m learning a lot about the science relating to them, but since its work with animals, and I love that, I love my job 🙂
