      @ gracerossiter,
Yes, the universe is fast expanding since its birth in the BigBang! The scientists even expect that at some point due to its continuous expansion the universe will rip apart in the same way a piece o cloth would do if you pulled it from different directions 🙂

Yep! And its not actually that hard to prove. There was a cool astronomer called Hubble. What he did was try to figure out how fast different galaxies in our universe were moving, and compare that to how close they were. What he found out was that the ones that are further away appear to move faster. We call this ‘Hubbles Law’, after him, because he was so clever! (I hope one day they name a scientific theory or law after me haha)

Here’s a pretty cool diagram that shows how this might be happening:

as eileen and aggelos say, yes its expanding. I think one of the big questions are: will it keep expanding, stop at some point and stay there, or contract again like a balloon with the air let out? It it keeps getting bigger will it tear itself apart, and if it contracts again then all the matter will condense in to one tiny place with a resulting massive explosion that might start the Big Bang and the universe off again. This could have happened millions of times over already, and maybe we are living in just one of these repeating cycles of birth, death and resurrection of a universe!
