Great question! There are actually 5 different kinds of flamingos, that are all found in different parts of the world.

The ones in the Dublin Zoo, which maybe you’ve been, are Chilean flamingos (and of course they’re not originally found in the zoo! In the wild, they are found in Chile, in South America). Compared to the other flamingos, its in the middle – it weighs about 3 kilograms, and is about 1 meter tall. The babies, when they’re born, only weight about 100 grams. This is about the same as an iPhone! They’re tiny.

The kind I study is the Greater Flamingo, and they’re the biggest of all of the kinds of flamingo. They weight 4kg, and are 1.5 meters tall. The smallest are the Lesser Flamingo, and they only weight two kilograms! The other two are the Carribbean and Andean, and they’re both around 3kg.

Check out this site – its great for information about the different kinds of flamingo… You can see some of the differences – for example, in addition to being slightly different sizes, although they’re all pink…they are pink in different ways (check out the legs/feathers/beaks)!
